I love FREE stuff!

This post is dedicated to Keli. She told me about Freecycle. Thanks Keli!

So there is this Yahoo group called Freecycle. I joined the Salt Lake group. The basic idea of the group is to keep useful, usable items out of landfills and into the hands of those who could use them.
The first thing I got was this play mat. It's obviously used but it doesn't matter to Kooy and he loves playing on it with his little cars.

The most recent item we acquired was this twin bed with the box spring and bed rails. We went and got in sight unseen but it turned out to be in GREAT shape. It's not brand new...it went through a few teenagers...but they've always had a mattress pad on it. No stains or markings. So, now we are all set for Kooy's birthday present (the race car bed...of course if he earns it by then...He's done really well with only a few minor setbacks that are mostly to be blamed on us as parents) And, by the way, last night in his new bed he slept in it all night until 8 am this morning! And he napped in it too. We think he likes it better than the toddler bed. But it's only been one night...

Other items we've gotten from Freecycle are a new infant towel set and a winter coat for Kooy. I think that's all. Oh, I got some swings for our swing set in the back yard but I don't know if they will work...we'll play around with them next Spring.

I have given away a crib mattress. We had an extra laying around. And I tried to give away a Halloween costume but the person I promised it too led me on for days and then finally said he didn't want it. That made me mad because I had plenty other people who wanted it but deleted them. Now that we have lucked out and gotten this twin bed I feel I really need to start giving back and not just be a "taker." We've got lots of organizing and cleaning to do before Peyton arrives so I am sure I'll have lots of opps for that.

And a final note....we got a Lazy Boy free also. It wasn't from Freecycle but a girl Matt works with...(thanks Ashley! ) just gave it to us. Matt called it pink but I think it's more a mauve/brown/maroony color. It looks great in our basement and Matt loves watching football in it.
Also, my sister in law gave me three pieces of Pampered Chef stoneware she found in her garage and never uses. WHAT!!!! I know. I can't believe it either. The best one of which was the lg. bar pan I have been wanting for a long time. So when I threw my Pampered Chef party I didn't have to waste my $60 worth of free product on stoneware. Because my collection was complete!!! Thanks Jen!
I love free stuff...especially when it's something we really need. And when it's something we don't really need but really want too. People are so kind and willing to give. My first thought used to be...How can I make money on this item? How much could I get for it? But since joining Freecycle and have been given these other items for free....I realize I am in debt and need to start paying it forward. I know I have junk laying around that someone could use and it's just taking up space and gathering dust.
Anyway, that's why I love free stuff.

Peyton? Has this been announced previously?

Before I flunked out of Flylady (flylady.net), one of my favorite things she would say is that garage sales are just a form of denial. GIVE stuff away and let it bless someone else.

I have heard of Freecycle but never used it before. I might have to check it out.

I'll probably be semi-freecycling my antique sofa to Megan's new-to-them but empty living room. Does it still count if I'll want it back someday?

You can have it back someday Binders. ALong with your queen bed frame and bookcase that we also have on loan...maybe someday we'll get our own furniture? But why bother when we have you? I DEFINATELY need to check out this freecycle thing. Sometimes I have great stuff I don't want or need and feel bad I don't know who to give it to!

Way to go Lisa. The problem with the need for a bed solved, almost like a miracle, huh? The chair is great, by the way. I gave it a test ride while I was there. That is such a cute picture of Kooy Booy! Hey, that is so cute the way I spelled boy to match his Kooy. Don't you think? SKW

Aww, a whole post just for me? You're so sweet. Seriously, though, I love freecycle. I have given away so much crap that I'm surprised people will pick it up! I was a member of the SL group during the summer when I was there, and I noticed a pretty big problem with promising stuff to people and them not showing up. I actually complained to the group moderator, and she/he said they would take care of it. Here in Chicago, if you are a no show more than twice, you are put on probation and can only give for a period of 3 months. So people here are much more reliable. Anyway, that's my schpeel for freecycle. Love love love it. I'm glad it worked out for you.
